Some off-campus ideas were my mom's hometown (Manorville, Long Island, NY) where I have a lot of family, my mom's school that she works at, or maybe some sort of volunteering group.
On campus ideas include the Collegiate Times, Hokies United (a community service group I found), or an Obama Campaign.

Chelsea,
These sound like good ideas. A hometown sounds a bit too general for a semester's work unless you're able to focus in on a specific group within it.
It seems like a useful thing to do at this point might be some brainstorming on what kinds of questions you have about these communities: what you know about them already, what you find intriguing, what you still want to know... This might bring more clarity. We'll try to find time to do some of this in class, but if we don't, the blog might be a good place for it.
Good thought on the Obama thing, I almost did something like that myself. But won't it be wierd if your community just disappears after Election Day and the class ends in December?
